“A neo-noir without a mystery, an exploitation film with an anti-violent stance, a skin flick that stabs the male gaze in the eye.” — MUBI
After the one-two gut punch of American maestro Abel Ferrara’s DRILLER KILLER and MS. 45, the sleazy-as-hell followup FEAR CITY is sublime, reveling in a quasi-documentary display of simply the best 42nd St. grotesqueries. Who could pass up this cast?! Tom Berenger, Melanie Griffith, Rae Dawn Chong, Billy Dee Williams, and even grizzly chomper Michael Gazzo (THE GODFATHER PART II) wallow in the neon slime as a (no joke!) kung fu killer runs the streets, hacking strippers to pieces. Even for Ferrara, who’s never one to shy away from gritty imagery, this film is gleefully over-the-top.
