JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT

Herschell Gordon Lewis, USA, 1968, AGFA + Something Weird, Cult

“See: an elaborately coiffed woman subjected to a drive-by soaking! See: a newspaper set on fire — while a woman’s trying to read it! See: a blind man robbed, a cripple trampled, a baby taken out of a stroller and thrown into the garbage!

This may very well be exploitation movie maverick H.G. Lewis’ most disturbing motion picture. When he made this outrageous, nihilistic low-grade classick back in the Florida of ‘68, teenage implements of destruction where a bit less threatening. However, Lewis’ teens tore a path of mayhem and destruction through an unsuspecting suburbia for one reason and one reason only: JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT.

Actually, what’s so unsettling about the film is how the line between a trivial prank and an ugly assault is so pointlessly blurred. In between the almost constant carnage, there’s the semblance of a plot involving a rivalry between hotheaded Denny, straight-laced jock Doug and Doug’s girlfriend Jeanne which sets into motion a chain of events which makes absolutely no sense.” (Marc Klapper, Something Weird Video)
