MR. AND MRS. KABAL’S THEATRE

Walerian Borowczyk, France, 1967, Arrow Films, Arthouse

Long before IMMORAL TALES and THE BEAST, controversial Polish filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk first made his name with this dazzlingly original “feature-length animated film for mature adults.” A series of loosely connected vignettes structured much like a vaudeville show, MR. AND MRS. KABAL’S THEATRE is about a grotesquely mismatched but strangely loving couple who perform absurd, surreal, and sometimes cruel acts in a desert full of strange flora and fauna. Made with a tiny production team at a time when animated features were even scarcer than they are now, MR. AND MRS. KABAL’S THEATRE is the polar opposite of a Disney film, with angular, mostly monochromatic graphics that bring the Kabals’ universe to startlingly vivid life.
