SISTER STREET FIGHTER: HANGING BY A THREAD

Kazuhiko Yamaguchi, Japan, 1974, Arrow Films, Action

Genre entertainment of the highest order, the SISTER STREET FIGHTER films are a wild ride through some of the best exploitation cinema Japan produced in the 1970s. Funky and over-the-top, filled with wall-to-wall action, and featuring some of the craziest villains ever depicted onscreen, the series embodies female power in a male-dominated genre and is a magnificent showcase for the physical presence and martial arts skills of its lead star.

“The continuing adventures of Li Koryu (Etsuko Shihomi). After avenging her brother’s death, she returns to Hong Kong where she witnesses the death of a detective with a glass eye. Contained in the hollow eyepiece is film showing women being trafficked...amongst them, a friend and former schoolmate. Heading to Japan to rescue her friend, Koryu sets out to put an end to the human smuggling.

HANGING BY A THREAD has a breakneck pace, tons of action, along with that bit of sleaze and exploitation showing exactly what era of Nippon cinema to which this film belongs. This installment seeks to go one step beyond the events of the first film. It’s a heck of a good time, filled with many moments of that odd ‘70s Japanese sensibility that makes films from this era stand out.” (Cesar Alejandro Jr., Film Smash)
